Life’s simple pleasures
The world over families come together, friends meet for catchups, or individuals sit down to take a few minutes for themselves. What do all of these have in common…a cuppa! So, what happens if you can’t enjoy a simple cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate due to mobility issues? This was a problem that we, at Rosa lifestyle, set out to solve.
There is nothing I love better than sitting down after a long day and enjoying a cup of coffee. It might just be my favourite thing; it’s always been a big part of our family to sit together and have a chat with cup of something good to drink. When mobility issues started to impact part of the family, I set out to create a cup which would keep our family enjoying a cuppa in an inclusive manner.
The first challenge was designing a cup which made a person feel confident, not afraid of spills and burns. This was key for us because independence is critical to all and someone with mobility issues is no different. So, what does it take for a cup to provide confidence and independence? Simple – it needs to be lightweight so that you can have a full mug of your favourite tipple without it becoming too heavy to lift and hold. Secondly it needs to have two handles for ease. Our mugs are made of melamine which keeps the weight really low at only 126g which is about half the weight of a small mug to begin with. Then there are the two handles which make it easy to use and promote stability. At the same time the two-handled design enables individuals who have different strength levels in their hands and wrists to have better mug balance and control.
So now I was really getting somewhere, I had a strong lightweight material and an inclusive design. So, the final challenge…style!
The market was full of dull, heavy mugs or two handled mugs which were designed for young children. This was not what I had in mind. I wanted something stylish, something sophisticated, a mug which would look good in any home and that I would be happy to use myself.
Having always had a keen interest in fashions and interior design I set about creating my first collection. Taking inspiration from the summer and the world of flora we came up for four colour designs; peach, yellow, lilac and white. The designs are created to be modern, eye catching and uplifting.
So here we are some months later and we are back at our normal family coffee and cake catch-up. This time with a set of mugs which means everyone is included, everyone is confident and most importantly everyone can enjoy life’s simple pleasures once more.
